Pain is a common experience to human and we all experience pain from time to time, yet suffering from prolonged pain can create emotional distress and actual impairments to our everyday life. Chronic pain can be associated with actual injury or tissue damage but this is not always the case. Experience of pain can be triggered by non-sensory factors like stress and cognition.
In Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), a treatment model developed by Prof. Paul Gilbert, pain can be considered to be a trigger of our threat system, because pain can be regarded as a signal of injury and harm, as well as a barrier to achieving our desired goals. Compassion focused pain management focuses on enhancing pain acceptance so that even if pain is here to stay in our life, we can still seek to minimize its impact on our well-being.
Rather than trying to eradicate pain, from a CFT perspective, we can try to soothe our emotional distress arising from pain with compassion and adjust our time active to reduce the flare-up of pain. In this way, we can still take actions to facilitate us to continue to pursue important and meaning life goals despite the presence of pain.

(ii) 43 pages of practices grouped into three modules, designed to strengthen skills in enhancing pain acceptance and balancing life activities to achieve adaptive goal pursuit while minimizing pain flare-ups. It is also completed with two appendix. You can use the blank coping cards to write down your learning as you complete the workbook. The sleep hygiene checklist and relaxation exercises are provided to target sleep disturbances, a common complaint among individuals coping with pain.
