• Our threat system often responds with chronic fight or flight reactions following traumatic life events. Rumination is common as we try to make sense of the trauma and most importantly, try to feel safe again. Some of us may experience flashback and feel like the traumatic is happening all over again.
• Compassion focused trauma work emphasized the importance to re-establish the sense of safety by recruiting our soothing system. Acknowledging our threat-system driven reactions to trauma, we can practice calming these responses by focusing on the presence, reminding ourselves that the difficult times had passed and supporting ourselves in a kind and nurturing attitude.
• These cards are designed to facilitate recovery from the aftermath of trauma in a more balanced mindset and self-compassionate attitude. They are written based on the rationale that while there is no quick fix to trauma, self-compassion could guide us through the healing journey.
• They can be used as reminders to cope with triggers or rumination in day to day life or as cue cards for compassionate letter writing to facilitate healing.
